Indigenous communities around the world have through history expressed and shared important pieces of their culture, history and heritage via their art and crafts. Wayúu artisans in La Guajira, Colombia, are no strangers to this type of expression. Their colorful and highly skilled crocheted bags are made with unique techniques inspired by their environment and culture. The Wayúu artisans are specialized in the art of making Mochilas (purse/handbags/backpacks), Chinchorros (very detailed hammocks), jewelry, pottery and many adornments highly useful in their environments.
We, at the Institución Etnoeducativa La Paz have developed an Arts and Cultural department geared towards the preservation of these skills in our communities, in hopes of empowering our children and students with the basic practices carried on by their elders, while earning them value and respect for that which is traditionally part of their heritage.
Wayúu artisans have as of late faced great exploitation at the hands of the "Alijuna" (foreigner) who fails to acknowledge the arduous work, time and skill required for the production of each of these pieces. Often devaluing the cost of each at time of purchase, these mochilas, chinchorros and other pieces are sold abroad for one hundred times the profit margin. We take great pride in educating our students in the importance of understanding the value of their art, culture and world recognized craftsmanship.
